Crossroads

is an annual festival of new media art showcasing digital and media-based art on commercial electronic billboard displays and advertising screens across Singapore.

The festival’s title takes cue from the site from which the new media artworks are displayed, as well as the crossroads between arts and technology. Rapid advancement in display manufacturing processes has seen the diminishing bezel slowly vanishing from commercial billboards and consumer products, the identity reintroduces the bezel digitally/visually to acknowledge and examine its relationship with the content it frames. Presented by ToNewEntities as part of Singapore Art Week 2022. (Credits — Website development: Vu Long; Day photography and video: Sadiq Mansor; Night photography: Vu Long)

Form & Agency

is a solo exhibition by artist Brandon Tay that explores the materiality of the digital. Presented on three stacks — the physical, the virtual, and live simulation components — the visual identity echoes the verticality of the stacks with a custom typeface. Shown in Yeo Workshop.

The experimental variable typeface, As above, so below with elongated ascenders and descenders is capable of forming ‘vertical ligatures’, not with lateral letters but across lines of texts through stems of letterforms. This verticality is reflected through the placement of texts on edges of walls in the gallery space; of thresholds between spaces. Vertical ligatures challenging the linearity of languages; of words in lines; of thresholds between symbols and meanings.
