TURBINE TROPICS

is a body of work by visual artist Priyageetha Dia, for Frieze Seoul 2023, presented by Yeo Workshop. A title design and A3 fold-out was designed based on Dia’s examination of the ambivalent spiral-vortex motif as a symbol of both expansion and extraction in postcolonial narratives.

TURBINE TROPICS reflects an experimental shift away from figuration towards greater abstraction. Dia leans on the spiral-vortex dynamic to signal the complexities of postcolonial societies where cultures, histories, and identities intermingle and merge to form alternative ecologies in circular temporalities.

Form & Agency

is a solo exhibition by artist Brandon Tay that explores the materiality of the digital. Presented on three stacks — the physical, the virtual, and live simulation components — the visual identity echoes the verticality of the stacks with a custom typeface. Shown in Yeo Workshop.

The experimental variable typeface, As above, so below with elongated ascenders and descenders is capable of forming ‘vertical ligatures’, not with lateral letters but across lines of texts through stems of letterforms. This verticality is reflected through the placement of texts on edges of walls in the gallery space; of thresholds between spaces. Vertical ligatures challenging the linearity of languages; of words in lines; of thresholds between symbols and meanings.
